Single Sign On FINALLY!

By smays

The History
We’ve been promised single sign on, IE: one password/one token for everything we done, but heretofore we have been waiting. Waiting. Waiting. OH and listening to endless vendor pitches about how its all gonna come true.  And we’ll get a PONY too.  Soo… What’s REALLY happening?  Well, we still have to mash a bunch of tech together but there is a group who JUST might have the closest thing to identity nirvana that we’ve seen yet!

Enter the Outsourced Model Here
We have been attempting to wrassle the inhouse and outsourced tech for a very well known customer of ours for the last year and have been running into the problem when staff is out of the facility and on some arbitrary Internet link like at Starbucks or at home.  How do we reliably get them to something we can trust and have it not be us?  How do we authenticate the desktops, servers, internal websites, external websites and WiFi all into a single secured login?  www.myonelogin.com might just be that answer.  It’s from a company called TriCipher and in terms of fixing this long suffering problem its better than sliced bread as well as beer.  Well, maybe not beer.

Making it Click
By doing some sort of LDAP thing (like SLAPD, OpenDirectory or Active Directory) we get the internal resources synchronized.  Then if we sync that to the data centers, we rope them in.  THEN if we make a secret mechanism for authenticating external users to myonelogin we can rope in all the external websites.  This means, single sign in nirvana, brah.  Obviously we aren’t going to give away all of ours or our client’s secrets (well, not ours, for FREE), but we are increasingly being engaged to solve this same problem for film/FX companies who have workers all over the place and may finally have brewed up a combo that really hits a home run.

FINALLY!
